Alcohol Awareness Week

Alcohol Awareness Week will take place from 3rd – 9th July 2023 with this year’s theme being ‘Alcohol and cost’. The annual week is managed and hosted by alcohol charity Alcohol Change UK and at Lextox we wanted to actively promote this important week in the calendar and the resources that Alcohol Change produce. Alcohol Awareness Week used to take place each November, but this has now officially moved to July.

With a focus on the cost of alcohol, Alcohol Change have stated “The total social cost of alcohol to society is estimated to be at least £21 billion each year. We as individuals also spend tens of thousands of pounds on average on alcohol over the course of a lifetime.” 1

Another cost associated with alcohol, is the cost to individuals and their families with record alcohol deaths recently reported, due to drinking during the pandemic. The office for National Statistics revealed that there were “9,641 deaths in the UK in 2021, compared to 7,565 in 2019 – a 27% increase.2

Heavy drinking can not only affect the person consuming the alcohol. The impact for families can be devastating and have a lasting effect on generations to come. 3

The recent cost of living crisis has also added to mounting pressure on some families, with those who do drink alcohol likely to be consuming more to help cope with their worries. 1

Here at Lextox we can help identify those families who are in need of detecting alcohol substance. We offer hair drug and alcohol testing. Lextox hair substance testing can establish the presence or absence of alcohol in a person’s system and the amount and occurrence of alcohol consumption. This information can be used to make decisions about child custody or visitation and can also be used to determine whether a person needs treatment for alcohol abuse.
